Quasar Accretion Disk by DarkSapiens Quasar Accretion Disk by DarkSapiens
Artistic representation of the disk of matter accreting into the supermassive black hole in the nucleus of a quasar. The disk gets hotter and brighter towards the center, where the gravity of the black hole creates gravitational lensing effects that show a distorted view of the matter behind, or even the side of the disk that would otherwise be hidden from view. Surrounding the disk are clouds of ionized gas at the inner edge of the Broad Line Region, which gets its name from the broad spectral lines that are seen in the spectrum of the quasar, due to their high speeds around the black hole.

I created this image on December 15th, the day before my PhD thesis defense, to include it in my presentation. It contains several mistakes that couldn't be fixed at the time, like a black hole perhaps too large compared to the disk size, and gas clouds that are too small when taking into account to what we know of the Broad Line Regions of active galactic nuclei.

The picture was drawn in negative using a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with a grade 2B lead and some strokes with the eraser itself to achieve some of the gaseous effect, and then inverted in Photoshop.
